Handling InMails - How Candidates Can Respond Like a Pro

If you've been on LinkedIn for a while, it's likely you've been contacted by a recruiter about a job you weren't necessarily looking for. A "cold" approach can be a great way to discover new opportunities. But how should you respond? Here are three approaches you can take:

1. Ignore: This might seem like the easiest option, especially if you're not interested in the position or the company. However, a quick and polite response can go a long way. A simple "Thank you for reaching out, but this opportunity isn't a good fit for me at this time" shows professionalism and keeps the door open for future possibilities.

2. Engage: If the opportunity sounds intriguing, even if it wasn't on your radar, take some time to learn more. Try not to ask questions via InMail/messaging , but arrange a short call to ask the recruiter specific questions about the role, the company culture, and why they thought you'd be a good fit. This demonstrates your interest and allows you to assess the opportunity against your own career goals.

3. Inform: The opportunity might not be your perfect match, but you can still use this as a chance to explore your own career path. Politely explain that the role isn't a fit for you at this time. However, you can use this chance to express your interest in a different area or position within the company, or even a specific type of role you're targeting in your job search.

Here's an example:

"Thank you for reaching out about the [Job Title] position. While this specific role isn't a perfect fit for my skillset, I'm currently looking for opportunities in [Target Role] and would love to hear more about any openings in that area you might have."

By expressing your interest, you can potentially connect with the recruiter for future opportunities that better align with your goals.

Bonus Tip: If you're open to being contacted by recruiters for relevant opportunities, consider creating a strong LinkedIn profile that showcases your skills and experience. This will make you more discoverable to recruiters searching for qualified candidates.

By following these tips, you can ensure you respond to cold approaches in a way that benefits your career.
